General Description
Otranto, also called "Porta d'Oriente", sticks out into the stretch of the same name, the Canale de Otranto, situated south of the Adriatic, on the western part of Italy. Old capital of the region, still keeps its original characteristics of the old business city, stretching into the Mediterranean. There are still medieval viewing towers used against the Turks. The historical centre of the city has remained the same despite the housing growth. The Castello Aragonese with its tower, bastions and wall, the old town with its winding narrow streets sliding between houses, the harbour has always been an important port of call for the West as well as being important for its crystal clear sea, dunes, caves, which with the Laghu Alimini make the city a real treasure. Historical city of the region directly by the sea, 30 km from Lecce, 30 km from Santa Maria di Leuca, 7 km from Terme di Santa Cesarea. In the resort: supermarket, shops, grocers, post office, bank, restaurant, bar, disco, cinema. Besides: chemist, doctor. Access: railway station in the resort. For arrivals by plane: airport Brindisi (BDS), Bari (BRI).
